Classic reimagined: Toyota Turbo Trail Cruiser at SEMA
At the upcoming SEMA automotive components exhibition in Nevada this November, Toyota Motor is set to unveil the Turbo Trail Cruiser. This SUV showcases an authentic Land Cruiser 60 chassis and body, but with the addition of a cutting-edge twin-turbo engine.
The Toyota F35A V6 engine, boasting a displacement of 3.4 liters and dual turbochargers, delivers an impressive 394 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. Such specifications are remarkable, especially for a vehicle equipped with a standard transmission featuring two solid axles and a five-speed manual gearbox.
Integrating this modern V6 into the classic Land Cruiser 60 required extensive modifications. Engineers had to fabricate custom brackets, develop a new oil pan, an intercooler, and a special adapter for the transmission, while also revamping the entire wiring harness. Notably, the project team focused on preserving the Land Cruiser 60's original appearance, given the increased demand for classic 1970s-80s off-roaders, which are now seen as cultural treasures.
Except for a lift kit and the installation of Continental TerrainContact A/T tires on chrome wheels, the Turbo Trail Cruiser remains near-identical to a pristine Toyota Land Cruiser 60 — a remarkable feat for a model no longer produced for over three decades.
